This week, Lake Oswego City Council conducted a study session on a potential Home Demolition Fee. The fee could be set as high as the current System Development Charges for single family homes, around $44,000. While the City Council considered impacts in both bull and bear markets, the analysis failed to properly discuss the full scope of development costs associated with arbitrarily discouraging redevelopment and increasing housing prices. The HBA does not support a demolition fee merely to preserve older housing stock, which is significantly less energy efficient than new homes. The HBA will continue to educate the City on the importance of supporting home redevelopment.
