The Home Builders Foundation, the charitable arm of the HBA, recently assisted with the renovations and opening of a day-shelter in Tigard. Just Compassion, an organization made up of religious, civic, and business groups opened the Tigard Resource Center this summer. The center is run by volunteers and provides a place where homeless can access job search resources, mental health services and food. HBF helped provide Just Compassion with a $35,000 grant, a project manager, and building captain for the renovation efforts of the shelter. The HBF’s work on projects such as this resource center mirror the HBA’s advocacy efforts and goals of housing availability and affordability for all. A 1,800-square-foot Tigard home was designed and renovated to be able to help the homeless in this unique, day-to-day way. Just Compassion has a dinner and auction planned on September 22 in hopes of raising the funds to purchase the home. Plans for future renovations include installing lockers, upgrading the main floor-bathroom, and a complete basement remodel with showers and a laundry room, with all upgrades meeting ADA standards.
