At a recent event in Beaverton, Congresswoman Suzanne Bonamici discussed her concerns about housing affordability. While the Portland metro area is booming, access to housing has not kept pace with the growth in high paying jobs. This disconnect has been amplified by local regulations that stymie the the ability of builders to produce new housing. Together, this creates a difficulty for first time homebuyers looking gain a foothold on the ladder to home ownership. In order to understand the magnitude of the housing affordability crisis in Oregon, the Congresswoman plans to host a series of roundtable discussions throughout the region with those in the homebuilding industry. The HBA supports these efforts and believes that the federal government can play a pivotal role in supporting new housing both through the reexamination of onerous regulations and the commitment of targeted dollars.
