Following a work session earlier this month in which the Sherwood City Council chose not to pursue a mid-cycle expansion request for the Sherwood West urban reserve area, HBA began meeting with stakeholders to discuss the city’s next opportunity to pursue a UGB expansion request in 2024. HBA originally submitted a letter of support for pursuing the mid-cycle request along with other entities such as the Sherwood Chamber of Commerce, and will continue to work with staff and the council on a 2024 approach with Metro. Metro is the governing body for UGB expansions and recently pivoted to allowing limited mid-cycle expansion requests at the three-year mark in between each six-year cycle. Citing a lack of a completed comprehensive plan for the area, the need to divert staff resources from more pressing projects to pursue the request and a general desire to focus on commercial development and “jobs” land, the council felt it wasn’t the right time to pursue the expansion request. HBA is currently represented on the Sherwood West Relook Technical Advisory Committee and, pursuant to Metro’s guidelines for the 2024 UGB expansion opportunity, will continue advocating for responsible growth in Sherwood.
