After two public hearings and HBA testimony on House Bill 2001 implementation, the Sandy City Council voted to allow detached in its low-density Single Family Residential Zone. This vote builds on Sandy’s current development code, which allows both attached and detached duplexes in other higher-density residential zones. While HB2001 requires Sandy to permit attached duplexes in all residential zones that allow for single dwelling detched homes, the city may chose whether to also allow detached duplexs on the same lots. During last month's middle housing policy considerations, the council also voted to increase the allowable Accessory Dwelling Unit (ADU) size from 600 to 720 square feet. As the city advances detached duplexes and larger ADUs as part of the June 2021 HB2001 implementation deadline, Sandy will provide increased development opportunities to meet the needs of its residents.
