On Thursday, July 8th, OSHA released temporary rules governing heat exposure for workers. Although temporary, these rules will remain in effect through the end of this “heat season” with a permanent rulemaking process to start in the fall. The rules require heat mitigation procedures at 80 degrees and 90 degrees and can be viewed here. Without OHBA’s state level advocacy, the adopted rules could have been much more onerous. Some of the originally proposed rules included a complete shutdown of outside work on days over 90 degrees and paid “heat-leave” for workers. OHBA and HBA will continue to advocate for reasonable worker safety rules regarding this and all other workplace issues. For more information, contact Ryan Makinster at ryanm@hbapdx.org.
